Ezov, A.: The Numeri exploratorum Units in the German Provinces and Raetia. In: Klio. Beiträge zur Alten Geschichte, 79, 1997, pp. 161-177
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to extract from the archaeological and the epigraphical sources the character, the time of appearence and the assignment of the exploratores units in the German provinces during the second and third centuries A.D. The inscriptions, dating mostly to the 2nd and 3rd century A.D., which mention exploratores units in the German provinces, found mainly in fortresses scattered along the border that is known, in the German literature, as the »German limes«. In the inscriptions they usually appear as numeri exploratorum. Mostly with the name of a specific place or an area following the denotation expl. An understanding of the function, mission, and organization of the exploratores units in Germany is based on three interrelated research issues: 1. territorial and functional connections with the province, 2. the organization and the structure of the Roman Army, especially the numeri, posted at the border during the second century, 3. the influence of historical events, such as the shifting of the borderline or the Marcomannian War, on the organization of the army and on the troop movements. - Conclusion: 1. The numeri exploratorum should be seen as task-designated unit for intelligence and reconnaissance. Such as other numeri units, like archers, camel riders, they were designed to specific function in the Roman army. 2. The prototype of the numeri exploration, who manned the border fortress in Germany, already existed in the legionary field forces. Definitely, by the time of Arrianus these units were established as numerus within the framework of the legion. it is possible that some independent units already existed along the German border in the first half of the first century. 3. The creation of new exploratores units and their posting on the palisade line in Germania Superior at the end of the second century, is probably a by-product of the reorganization of the intelligence apparatus of the Roman army that originated from the military demands of the Marcomannian war. 4. The exploratores were tasked with joint patrol and intelligence missions both within the province, providing security to border region, and possible beyond it. Most of the exploratores units were located adjacent to borderline in positions affording tactical control. The very fact that for the most part the explorators operated alongside auxilia units demonstrates that they had separate missions in the intelligence field: long-range reconnaissance, reporting on movement of hostile elements in the forward areas, intelligence gathering, and perhaps political observations among the border peoples. 5. One may assume that derived from their missions, the exploratores consisted of both mounted and foot elements, and their personnel were chosen in accordance with the demands of their tasks. Intelligence skills demand a degree of professionalism, a high level of training, dependable reporting, and well developed fighting skill. nevertheless, there is no proof that according to standard of recruitment or origin the exploratores were elite units*
