Frederick Catherwood - Bicentenary of his birth

The few images on this page may commemorate the work of one of the greatest archaeologist-artists of the 19th century.
Frederick Catherwood travelled and worked in Greece and Rome, in the Near East (Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem) and Egypt (expedition of Robert Hay).
Together with John Lloyd Stephens he brought to light the world of the ancient Maya.
His masterly paintings and sketches are unrivalled up to now.
